Frequently asked questions

Who is paying for this?

This project is funded by community partners, donations, grants, and is made possible due to the time and effort of local volunteers.

Is this a municipal project?

No, this is a project run and made possible by a local nonprofit organization:
Vision Historic Preservation Foundation’s tax exempt ID is 85-2855176.

Is The 1895 still owned by the City of Rockdale?

No, in November 2020, Vision Historic Preservation Foundation, a 501.c.3 nonprofit organization, purchased The 1895 from the City of Rockdale.

Why are you changing the way the building has always looked?

Vision Historic Preservation Foundation is restoring The 1895 to its original Victorian design. While the majority of the details and facade will remain the same, there will be some updates for modern ADA and Fire Code compliance, outdoor space, and multi-use spaces inside.

Was there originally a bell tower?

Yes, the bell tower was an original feature of the building as designed by renowned Texas architect Arthur Osborn Watson. See our Blog Page to view early 1900’s photographs of The 1895 in its original design.

How does the restoration of The 1895 benefit the Rockdale community? Why is this a priority over things like road and water system repair or bringing a hospital to town?

While bringing a hospital to the area and repairing water system infrastructure are worthy priorities in our community, these aspects are outside of the responsibility and mission statement of Vision Historic Preservation Foundation. City streets and the water system fall within the jurisdiction of the City of Rockdale.

The restoration of The 1895 is key to the revitalization of historic downtown and representative of the possibilities in Rockdale. Rockdale’s forefathers intended for The 1895 to be a visual centerpiece, much like other communities are centered around a courthouse or theater. The 1895’s bell tower proudly greets locals and visitors to its downtown and seeks to once again be the center of culture & community in Rockdale.
