Ezekiel Mitchell - True Blue Bull Rider
By Brandon Reynolds, Vision Historic Preservation Foundation Historical Committee Chair
Ezekiel Mitchell, a prominent figure in the world of professional bull riding, has an inspiring story marked by determination and self-taught skills. Born in Rockdale, Texas, Mitchell did not come from a rodeo family and lacked the traditional connections or resources typically associated with the sport. Despite these obstacles, at the age of 14, he turned to unconventional means to learn bull riding, utilizing YouTube videos and a makeshift metal bull for practice. His primary source of instruction came from videos made by former Professional Bull Riders (PBR) star Dustin Elliott.
Mitchell's journey in bull riding began in earnest at the age of 16 when he rode a real bull for the first time. This experience solidified his decision to pursue a career as a cowboy. By the age of 23, he had already achieved professional status and was competing at an elite level in the PBR.
His story is chronicled in the Snapchat docuseries "Life By The Horns," which follows his journey in the competitive and predominantly white sport of professional bull riding. The series offers an inside look at Mitchell's rise to success as a Black cowboy and his quest to win the world title, a feat that no Black American has achieved in over 35 years. Through his story, Mitchell aims to bring awareness to the African American cowboy community and debunk stereotypes associated with cowboy life.
Despite being at the top of his game, Mitchell acknowledges the ongoing challenges he faces, both mentally and physically, in the demanding world of professional sports. He emphasizes the importance of self-respect and the respect of peers and fans in the bull riding community. Mitchell has expressed his surprise at the level of respect he receives from his peers, highlighting the supportive nature of the bull riding community.
Mitchell's ultimate goal is to win the world title in professional bull riding. This aspiration is not just about personal achievement but also about being part of the larger cowboy family, a community that he deeply values and respects.
His connection to Rockdale, Texas, is significant, as it is his hometown and the place where he began learning to ride. Rockdale played a pivotal role in his development as a bull rider, providing the backdrop for his early experiences and initial steps into the world of rodeo. Mitchell's journey from Rockdale to becoming a top-ranked bull rider and a member of the Austin Gamblers is a testament to his dedication and skill.
In summary, Ezekiel Mitchell's biography is a story of passion, perseverance, and breaking barriers. His journey from Rockdale, Texas, to the elite levels of professional bull riding showcases his exceptional talent and dedication to the sport. His efforts to challenge stereotypes and promote diversity in the rodeo community further amplify his impact beyond the arena.
