NATIONAL TRUST CYNTHIA WOODS MITCHELL FUND FOR HISTORIC INTERIORS GRANT AWARDED
Funding Contributes to Phase One Interior Restoration.
ROCKDALE, TX, JULY 19, 2023 - Vision Historic Preservation Foundation (Vision Rockdale) is proud to have been awarded $5,000 from the National Trust’s Cynthia Woods Mitchell Fund for Historic Interiors. These funds will support Phase One interior restoration of The 1895, the former Rockdale City Hall and Opera House, as part of the Foundation’s adaptive reuse plans to transform it into an Arts & Entertainment Center.
Once Phase One exterior restoration of The 1895 has been completed later this year Vision Rockdale will restore the South interior wall. This portion of the project will be funded in part by a grant from the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Historic Interiors Grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Funded work will include the south interior wall (upstairs & downstairs), interior finish carpentry trim around south windows (34) & doors (4) plus the framing & trim for the interior bell tower access door, and finish out of the bell tower observation deck interior. It is estimated that this aspect of the work would be completed by Q4 2023 or early Q1 2024.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation recently announced the 2023 recipients of the Johanna Favrot Fund for Historic Preservation and the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Fund for Historic Interiors. Grants from these two funds help preserve a diverse range of historic sites across the country. Between them, the National Trust has granted a total of $223,500 to 32 organizations in 19 states.
The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Fund for Historic Interiors was established in July 1997 by George P. Mitchell in honor of his wife Cynthia to assist in the preservation, restoration, and interpretation of historic interiors. In total, the National Trust received 211 eligible applications requesting funds for planning work, physical preservation, and education and outreach programming.
